The Next Generation 2023 Subaru Crosstrek (XV) – Hybrid Compact Crossover SUV

the new SUV announced two weeks ago by Subaru turned out to be the XV of the third generation. However, not quite so: the crossover was renamed, the name Crosstrek, which was previously used only in the USA and Canada, became global. The world premiere of the SUV was held in Japan, so for now the model is presented only in the specification for the home market. Well, let us remind you that the previous cross has been in service since 2017, it survived the last more or less serious restyling in 2020.

The SUV retained the Subaru Global Platform (SGP) bogie, but it was improved: in particular, the suspension mounts were strengthened, the supporting base of the body is now more rigid. At the same time, the wheelbase remained the same – 2670 mm. Subaru also announced that the steering mechanism was reconfigured (with an electric power steering on the rail), in addition, a new mastic is used at the joints of the roof panel with the sidewalls – it dampens vibrations better.

The dimensions have not changed much. The length of the new Subaru Crosstrek is 4480 mm (-5 mm compared to the outgoing Japanese XV), the width is 1800 mm (the predecessor has the same figure), the height (with roof rails) is 1580 mm (-15 mm). Ground clearance – the same 200 mm.

The SUV has retained the form factor of the previous model, and yet the Crosstrek has a more solid appearance: the radiator grill has become wider, the diode headlights and taillights are “sharper”, the cross has also received more impressive bumpers. In Japan, the suv is based on 17- or 18-inch wheels.

The main “trick” in the cabin is a vertical multimedia system tablet, like other recent Subaru models. They also remade the fastening of the front seats: the skids are now attached to the body, without intermediate supports. The virtual “tidy”, which is available from the related station wagon Subaru Levorg, did not get to the SUV. But Crosstrek became the first model of the brand in Japan with a new generation EyeSight system: a third wide-angle camera was added to two lenses under the windshield, it is installed in the center and, as the company said, recognizes cyclists and pedestrians faster. The list of equipment has also been supplemented by a full-fledged all-round viewing system (there used to be cameras in front and behind).

The new Subaru Crosstrek has so far been presented only as a hybrid e-Boxer, the installation includes an atmospheric “boxer” 2.0, a Lineartronic V-chain variator and an electric motor (built into the variator). The return has not yet been announced. The former Subaru XV has a similar system, on the old crossover the “aspirated” produces 145 hp, the electric motor – only 14 hp. The previous generation SUV in Japan is also available with a naturally aspirated 1.6 engine with 115 hp. Crosstrek will also have a “traditional” version, but at the same time, some local media have predicted a 1.5 turbo engine for such an SUV. Like its predecessor, the new crossover is all-wheel drive by default.

Subaru Crosstrek will go on sale in Japan next year. After the model has mastered the domestic market, it will be sent for export.
