This is the all-new 2026 Mazda CX-5, and at first glance, it’s a little sharper, a little bigger, and a little more tech-heavy than the one it replaces. But is it a game-changer, or just a carefully tweaked version of a proven formula?
The Mazda CX-5 has always been a quiet achiever in the hotly contested mid-size SUV segment. Never as flashy as some rivals but with a reputation for style and driver engagement.
But this latest third-generation Mazda CX-5 leans into those strengths while adding more comfort and technology for the daily grind and – finally – the option of a hybrid powertrain.
A carryover 2.5-litre petrol engine will be launched first when the vehicle goes on sale in 2026 followed by hybrid options, subbed SkyActiv-Z, roughly a year later.
On the outside, Mazda’s designers have gone for evolution, not revolution. There’s a more chiseled front end, a bolder grille, and angular headlights borrowed from Mazda’s larger CX-70 and CX-90.
The vehicle is bigger in every external dimension which liberates more room inside and the rear doors open wider for easier access — a welcome touch for parents dealing with recalcitrant children.
Front and centre is Mazda’s largest-ever touchscreen running a Google operating system. It’s designed to feel as intuitive as your smartphone, and yes, there’s wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto too.
There’s also more cargo space, with a lower load floor to make lifting heavy items less of a workout.
