Review: The Subaru Forester Hybrid Is Almost American

The 2025 Subaru Forester is all-new and available with a hybrid for the first time. It’s still built in Japan, but production is moving to Indiana starting later this year.

The Forester is Subaru’s best-seller in the U.S. and now has a starting price of $31,415 for a conventional model and $38,015 with the hybrid, which is only offered on mid-level and high-end trims.

It is powered by a 2.5-liter flat four-cylinder engine coupled with two electric motors. One to provide power and the other to generate it. A combined 194 hp is sent through a continuously variable automatic transmission and Symmetrical All-Wheel drive system.

It is rated for 35 mpg combined, which is up for 28 mpg and 29 mpg for the non-hybrid models, which have 180 hp engines.

The interior features a digital instrument cluster and a larger portrait-oriented touchscreen display. Top models come with heated and ventilated seats and a 360-degree camera system, while all Foresters get the EyeSight package of electronic driver aids, which includes lane-centering adaptive cruise control.

The Forester comes from the factory with all season tires, but has 8.7 inches of ground clearance and a suspension that is suitable for driving off pavement.
