Toyota GR Corolla GTS 2023 Australian Spec Revealed

The narrative surrounding TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has progressed into its latest chapter, where the sizzling and fierce GR Corolla is set to make its debut in Australian showrooms come March. The GR Corolla joins the esteemed ranks of the GR86, GR Supra, and GR Yaris in the lofty TOYOTA GAZOO Racing family. The GR Corolla is available in a GTS grade with a high degree of specification, commanding a price of $62,300 plus additional on-road costs.

Toyota Australia has diligently secured 700 units of the GR Corolla GTS for the initial year of release, with the forthcoming limited-run Morizo Edition set to feature exclusive features that will intensify its already potent performance. The Morizo Edition will have a measly 25 units available, which will be promptly absorbed by automotive aficionados.

Sean Hanley, the Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operations at Toyota Australia, expressed his elation with the arrival of the all-new GR Corolla, as it symbolizes a significant milestone for the nameplate. The GR Corolla is predicated on the popular Corolla hatch, possessing the widely acclaimed TNGA-C platform that has been vastly enhanced to ensure high-performance driving dynamics.

The GR Corolla showcases a turbocharged petrol engine, all-wheel drive, wider track front and rear, a completely overhauled suspension, and design elements and styling enhancements that are distinctly unique from the rest of the Corolla family. The GR Corolla boasts a high-output 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine that is identical to the one featured in the GR Yaris, which has been fine-tuned to produce an amped-up 221kW of power at 6500rpm, and 370Nm of torque over a wider rev band, from 3000-5550rpm.

The improvements in the GR Corolla’s output are largely due to enhancements such as the triple-exit exhaust which mitigates back pressure, strengthened pistons and exhaust valves, and an expanded capacity for the direct-injection fuel pump and engine oil cooler.

All GR Corollas come equipped with a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission with intelligent rev-matching technology, which has been meticulously engineered to deliver the maximum driving pleasure to its user. The Morizo Editions take it a step further by extracting an additional 30Nm of torque from the turbocharged engine, while tightening the transmission’s gear ratios to take full advantage of the additional torque.

The sophisticated GR-FOUR all-wheel-drive system guarantees exceptional handling and cornering performance in the GR Corolla, reinforced by Torsen limited-slip differentials on both the front and rear axles for optimal torque distribution. Optimized suspension geometry, extensive chassis reinforcements, weight reduction, and dedicated ventilated disc brakes all combine to deliver an exhilarating driving experience, with the Morizo Edition featuring even further weight reduction and structural reinforcement.
