It’s been a long, long time since the world’s largest car maker offered a true performance version of its most popular hatchback, but the 2023 Toyota GR Corolla GTS puts that right.
With 221kW/370Nm from its remarkable 1.6-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, a slick six-speed manual gearbox, all-wheel drive traction and great handling, it’s a welcome addition to what it currently a very talented hot hatch crop.
It takes all the pieces that make the GR Yaris Rallye so engaging and instals them in a larger, more practical five-door bodyshell, in the process creating a fine replacement for the now-defunct Subaru WRX STi.
