Important to understand the GR codes, this is not a hardcore performance GR model, it’s a GR-S. It is based on an existing variant (In this case the Xr Non-Hybrid) but with some minor improvements and aesthetic enhancements like the S-line or R-line in Audit and VW respectively.
The Corolla Cross hit the ground running when it came out in 2021 and as anticipated it was topping sales charts at some point, in fact as recently as April 2022, it was the top-selling passenger car in South Africa.
This vehicle has proved that the Corolla nameplate is not dead, and Toyota made an amazing strategy with it. Creating a Cross, one of the best-sellers, was the right move considering that the world has shifted from crossovers leaving the sedans in this class to e-hailing taxis. This has revived the Corolla nameplate.
The supply was cut short by devastating floods in KZN which heavily impacted Toyota’s supply chain as the plant was shut down due to damage sustained from the floods. Toyota resumed operation in August 2022, four months later. This vehicle we are looking at was introduced when the plant was re-opened, I think it’s just going to continue from where it left off, the pricing is still very much attractive.
