2022 Lexus NX: All You Need to Know
The second generation of the compact Lexus NX SUV is on the way. While its appearance is similar to the outgoing model, the 2022 Lexus NX looks to be dramatically improved in every way. Lexus will offer four distinct powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid NX.
There’s bigger news in the cabin of the new NX. Lexus has finally ditched their distracting and hard-to-use Remote Touch interface for an all-new, touch-screen infotainment system with displays as large as 14 inches.
Why Is the 2022 Lexus NX Important?
Like many automakers, Lexus sales are dominated by SUVs and crossovers. The NX is the company’s second-best seller, behind the powerhouse 2021 Lexus RX, which in 2020 almost outsold all of its other SUVs combined.
With the new model, Lexus is broadening the vehicle’s appeal by offering a wide variety of models, including a turbo, a hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid. The lineup will include F-Sport models, with enhanced handling and more aggressive looks that engage different customers than mainstream NX models.
The luxury compact SUV segment is highly competitive, with solid competitors from nearly every luxury car maker in the marketplace. To excel, a vehicle has to be more than just good – it has to excel in every way.
Exterior Design: Evolutionary
The exterior design of the 2022 Lexus NX isn’t a great departure from the current model. It’s just a bit more mature looking, with a somewhat toned-down version of the Lexus signature spindle grille and a slightly lower-appearing stance.
Its distinctive checkmark running lights have been pulled inside the headlight cluster, allowing Lexus designers to create distinctive lower front fascia’s for different trim levels. At the back, you’ll find a full-width lighting motif like the style used on the Lexus UX and Lexus IS. For the first time, Lexus has dispensed with the brand’s logo, instead using lettering on the tailgate to spell out the company name.
Lexus will offer an F Sport package on some NX models.
Interior Design: Revolutionary
The redesigned Lexus NX retains the driver-focused cockpit of the first-generation model. However, it’s dramatically updated with an all-new touch-screen infotainment system that tosses the old touchpad controller aside for a new interface. A 9.8-inch touch screen comes standard, with a 14-inch display available.
We’ll talk about the new infotainment system’s capabilities a bit later in this story.
Because the new NX rides on a new platform, Lexus was able to increase cabin and cargo space, while fitting the crossover with new front seats.
An available interior illumination package allows NX drivers to choose from 14 lighting themes and 64 colors. Top-trim models feature open-pore wood accents. Multiple interior upholstery colors will be offered, including the dramatic Rioja Red synthetic leather from the previous generation.
Powertrains and Performance
The 2022 Lexus NX will be offered with four distinct powertrain options. First, the Lexus NX 250 gets a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine that’s rated at 203 horsepower. It’s matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission and front- or all-wheel drive.
Next up the ladder is the all-new 275-horsepower 2.4-liter turbo that’s fitted in the NX 350. It’s good for a 6.8-second trip from zero to 60 mph. It employs an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with all-wheel drive.
Two hybrid powertrains are offered. The first is the standard hybrid NX 350h, which pairs a 2.5-liter gas engine with a pair of electric motors to provide 239 horsepower. Its all-wheel-drive system doesn’t rely on a driveshaft between the front and back wheels. Instead, the back wheels are powered by an electric motor when additional traction is needed.
The 2022 Lexus NX 450h+ is the quickest member of the NX family, with the ability to launch from zero to 60 mph in a Lexus-estimated six seconds.
